FUGU is an improvisational music duo consisting of FUNG Chern Hwei (violin) and NG Chor Guan (Theremin). Fung is a professional violinist based in New York City, while Ng is a Thereminist and a prolific music composer and sound designer based in Kuala Lumpur. FUGU is an essentially Malaysian creation: it reflects the multilingual Malaysian at large, their multiple identities and the constant brushing of shoulders with different cultures and ideas.

As part of their China tour, Swiss artists Denis Rollet and JMO will present a sound performance at Meridian Space. Denis’s sound performances are complexe, raw and intense. As for JMO (Julie Semoroz), her art is full of melancholy, metaphysical poetry, and also deals with language and its manipulations. Her sounds often include various organic materials, such as voice recording or sounds from the human body that she reworks. Her performances are journeys through a dreamlike universe.

At Meridian Space, Jason Kahn will present a sound / text installation from April 10 to 24. Each day, Kahn will add new text written about sounds encountered in his daily travels through Beijing. In addition to these texts Kahn will be collecting sounds, recording on the go. These sounds will be integrated with the numerous texts in the final installation, played through many small speakers installed in the exhibition space. Some of these sounds might parallel the sounds written about in the texts, but many will not.
During the opening (Sunday April 10, 6 pm), Kahn will present the philosophy behind his sonic installations, and share stories of sound discoveries around Beijing.

Meridian Space is thrilled to host the live debut of CHIMERAS: a comprehensive artwork that involves live performance, space, film, sound, and improvisation by the artist duo Sergio Calderón and Céli Lee. Inspired by Borges’s ‘The Book of Imaginary Beings’, Sergio & Céli designed and constructed a series of creatures that represent extinct ancient animals in an alternative natural history. The piece can only be fully realised, as well as experienced, in its physical embodiment with live music performance by their avant-garde band 無 — MU.

At a Death Café, people — often strangers — gather to eat cake, drink tea, and discuss death.
As expressed in the official charter of this international movement, the objective is “to increase awereness of death with a view to helping people make the most of their (finite) lives.”
A Death Café is a group-directed discussion of death with no agenda, objectives or themes. It is a discussion group rather than a grief support or counselling session.

“Inner City Doldrums” is a visual art and video exhibition by Filippo Cardella and Karel Downsbrough. Documented here is the dystopian journey of a solitary vagabond, the Last Man, as he wanders between the glory of a gentrified metropolis and the ruins of a post-atomic Beijing, looking for answers to his own uneasiness towards life.
These snapshots of times to come will be on display at Meridian Space from April 30 to May 15 – opening on Saturday April 30, 6 pm.

On June 24, as part of our HIC (Inland) series, we will screen two documentaries by Josh Frank: “Howling into Harmony” (2011), about the rich and complex experimental music scene of Beijing – and “Collecting Insanity” (2014), focused on a mind-boggling museum dedicated to the Cultural Revolution, established by an ex-Chinese official turned real-estate tycoon.

The MIJI Concert Series is back, for another experimental music performance taking place in a long rectangular room. Featuring Ma Jin, Zhao Cong and Liu Xinyu. Ma Jin, who is interested in building or modifying little sound devices, will present a hardware-based performance. Liu Xinyu mainly uses no-input mixer feedback and self-made sound installations to explore micro sound worlds. During this concert, Liu Xinyu will launch his new cassette, a theatre soundtrack work: Music For Daniel, a Zoomin’ Night production.

On this first session, we will screen “Day of the Crows”, a beautiful French film about a feral young boy raised in the forest by his ogre-like father, who eventually encounters the outside world; and a selection of works by the Brothers Quay, filmmakers known for their dark universe full of strange puppets.

Meridian Borderline presents: COASTING/COSTEANDO. Colombian photographers and artists Juanjo Pérez and Carlos Jiménez open a series of exhibitions that explore various approaches to both conceptual and aesthetic representation, with photography as the primary medium. Carlos Jiménez documents a world-famous celebration that finds its roots in the ethnically diverse character of Colombia’s northern coast – Barranquilla’s Carnival, while Juanjo Pérez unlocks the slow passing of time in forgotten places where the structures are frozen and the clock is at a standstill.

This week, we’ll start off with The Old Lady and the Pigeons, the story of a famished police officer whose only path out of starvation is to dress up as a giant pigeon — a little jewel by French animator prodigy Sylvain Chomet (who later went on to make the unforgettable Triplets of Belleville). Following up, another masterpiece of weird dark humour: Bill Plympton’s Idiots and Angels, about a brutish lout whose doubtful sense of morality is perturbed when two wings suddenly sprout in his back… The session will conclude on a mystery short!

This week’s session is for lovers of literature and ideas. We will start off with Spring and Chaos, a stunning animated take on the life of famous Japanese poet Kenji Miyazawa and his colorful world, featuring beautiful line drawings and watercolor. Following up will be “Is the Man Who Is Tall Happy?”, an animated documentary on the life of the philosopher, linguist and political activist Noam Chomsky, created by Michel Gondry (director of The Science of Sleep, Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, etc.)

Tonight’s show will focus on combining audio and visual mediums in a live performance. False Object is an audio visual duo that is visiting from London. The group features the music from Alberto Ruiz Soler who studied music at the Royal College of Art and regularly composes music for independent dance groups around Europe. Support will be given by Noise Arcade with visuals from J and gogoj doing both the audio and visuals for her performance.

Multi-layered psychedelic frenzy and all sorts of (re/de)-construction will descend upon Meridian Space on August the 20th. On the bill we have 工工工, duo consisting of Joshua Frank (Hot & Cold) and Tom Ng (Offset: Spectacles), who will provide some serious unconventional guitar-bass boogies. Also on hand will be TOW, another duo featuring Liu Ge (the Molds) and Yang Fan (Ourself Beside Me) who combine forces to experiment fully on stage with a high dose of psychedelia shrouding their performances. Last but not least, we’ll be attentive to the surprises the versatile technical-wizard Meng Qi will bring into the mix that night.

This week, join us for two thoughtful and poetic animated views on the consequences of war. We will start off with Hayao Miyazaki’s legendary Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind (1984), a fantasy masterpiece dealing with such profound themes as mankind’s will to dominate nature; next on this double-bill, Ari Folman’s Waltz with Bashir (2008), an animated semi-documentary in which the filmmaker revisits his own memory of the war in Lebanon. Unforgettable images, and a deeply pacifist message.

This week, join us for the legendary Chinese animation film Nezha Conquers the Dragon King (1979), an epic tale of magic and adventure featuring one of Chinese mythology’s most lovable characters. Then we will screen a selection of Czech animation master Jan Švankmajer’s early short films — a dazzling and unforgettable array of stop-motion works, full to the brim with poetry, imagination and a gleeful sense of humour that proved a major source of inspiration for the likes of Terry Gilliam. The 8th and final session of our Animeridian series homes in on the strange and mysterious process of growing up. Starting with Wolf Children (2012) — a modern Japanese fable on finding one’s sense of belonging within society, featuring a family of werewolves, we will then finish on Fantastic Planet (1973), a stupendous Franco-Czech animation centered on a little human boy raised as a pet animal by giant blue aliens, and who eventually rebels against them.
