“AS IF A PRESENCE…” (Comme une présence)

Charlotte Guibé, Ren Bo, Belinda Cannone

Writing has long been a major relay of Western painting. The relationship between these two art forms is completely different in China, where the written word is both written and painted at the same time. The relationship to the image itself is very different.

“As if a Presence…” is a proposal for cultural and interdisciplinary exchange between a recognised French writer, Belinda Cannone, a French visual artist, Charlotte Guibé, and a Chinese visual artist, Ren Bo. It focuses on several axes: interdisciplinarity, circumnavigations between images and the written word, and the writer’s perspectives on the work of one visual artist in particular.

The name this project refers both to a catalogue born from the encounters of these three figures, and to the various exhibitions that will take place simultaneously at Jiali Gallery and Meridian Space, in Beijing. The French title (Comme une présence…) is also a nod to the poet René Char and to his work, Commune présence, and to the ghostly aura that sometimes emanates from the work of the two visual artists who joined hands to complete this project. While Charlotte Guibé’s ink wash paintings erase or draw a veil over objects and characters, Beijing-based artist Ren Bo films in the negative, which reinforces the wraithlike presence that already charactises her mudras.

Charlotte Guibé’s Dinners series is an invitation to plunge into the artist’s painting. The viewer does not look at this presentation of figures seated at tables but is instead encouraged to “taste” the still lifes.

The colour fawn, used extensively both in the shadows and lights, plays a fundamental role in the shaping and spatial rendition in Charlotte’s painting. The tones let faces melt into abstract thoughts, as the composition allows another dimension to emerge and reveal itself to the viewer.

Certain bodies, substances and feelings can emit and transmit luminescence or phosphorescence that persists thanks to the opacity of the image, and can also create a very evocative light. Those works deal with the question of time spent immersed in the image, the sense of the image building up, a faithful picture that is however something other than photography.

Born in 1958, Belinda Cannone is a novelist and essayist, as well as Ph.D and university lecturer in Comparative Literature. She has worked as a university professor in France for almost thirty years, and published several essays on literature, often focusing on the links that exist between literature and music.
