Meridian Space Design Talk: “From 马扎 to Mazha”

2015/03/14 (Sat) @ 14:00 - 16:00

Studio HVN revisits traditional Beijing-style handicraft with a brand-new, custom-made furniture series.

无标题1It was in front of the Joy Luck Pie Club, during the Beijing Design Week 2014, that Meridian met Dutch designer Henny.

We were curious about the colourful foldable stools on display, which seemed made from an array of very different materials woven together. Although they looked like the traditional Beijing mazha, they also had a very contemporary feel to them.
We met their designer, Henny van Nistelrooy, who told us about the rich experience he acquired while living and working in the UK, Italy and China. He designed this endearing “twenty-first century mazha” as an emblem of contemporary Beijing — a city where traditional Chinese culture mingles with modern shapes and colours, in an increasingly cosmopolitan and innovative spirit.

Meridian Space is a place for creativity, where different cultures meet. Henny’s mazha were exactly what we needed: an experimental hybrid of local tradition and cutting-edge design. Therefore, we invited Henny’s Studio HVN to produce a set of custom-made furniture and interior decoration for the Meridian Space Art Lounge, including a poster display, curtains, rugs, tables, and of course a whole collection of his iconic mazha–complete with foldable back-rests.

0Y3B2628Environmental concerns and a smooth integration within Meridian Space’s post-industrial atmosphere were two key factors in Henny’s design. All wood used for the tables and chairs is FAS-certified American ash, and the mazha seat fabric is mostly woven from recycled offcuts. Colours are a mix of warm brown, red tones and grass green to blend with our walls of red bricks and green boxes.

Besides, as space use inside the Art Lounge had to remain flexible, to work both as a coffee shop and as an events venue, Studio HVN made sure the furniture is as lightweight and easy to move and store as possible.

Henny’s “MAZHA” series is now in display and in use at Meridian Space, where it can also be ordered bespoke from Studio HVN.
To celebrate this important addition to our space, and the birth of this beautiful and comfortable cross-cultural design series, we invited Henny to throw a party at Meridian Space next Saturday afternoon — and share with us more details about his creative process. Join us!
