Exhibition: “On the Road” by Luo Bing

2015/03/21 (Sat) @ 14:00 - 2015/04/03 (Fri) @ 16:00

As a photographer, Luo Bing has consistently displayed an aesthetic that is closer to that of the painters of the past; hers is a sensibility rooted in the Renaissance, rather than in modern art—a pictorial memory where time is fixed without distortion or manipulation; where light and perspective become the actors in the play and the subject, its denouement. There will always be in this simplicity a strange attraction that instinctively draws us into the photograph—an undisciplined rush of bliss in which the composition and the forces of harmony and contrast, tints and tones create the photographic instant.

For the past twenty years, Luo Bing’s life has been shared mostly between China and France. This multicultural experience has strongly informed her aesthetic sense and her artistic research—in which those different influences coexist effortlessly, exuding a feeling of peace and complementarity. In her words: “I don’t pursue style for style’s sake. What I want is for my photos, through the honest depiction of reality, to touch people and make them dream.”

“For me, photography is primarily a medium to record life. From a young age, I have been very sensitive to the passage of time; by recording all those fleeting moments, be they happy or beautiful or sad, I can make them last, and prevent their disappearance.
The camera is my paintbrush: I use lenses to capture the scene before me, construct the image I have in mind, and express my thoughts and feelings. I shoot all my photos under natural light, and none of them goes through any post-production. This is my way of saying that no matter where you are or what kind of life you are living, simple natural beauty is all around you.
As French artist Marcel Duchamp once said, “My best artwork is my life.” Although I would never dare compare myself to such an artist as Duchamp, and am reluctant to consider my photos as art, I know that in every moment, I always try my best to make my life come closer to art. Every time I press the shutter release, I try to make the scene within the lens, its structure and its lighting to form something akin to a painting. My photos may not be particularly groundbreaking, because I don’t pursue style for style’s sake. What I want is for my photos, through the honest depiction of reality, to touch people and make them dream.”
