"How Can You Live
(more) Sustainably in Beijing?"
Thursday, March 7th, 6pm
LD Design Center
What does what you buy, what you wear, and how you live reveal about who you are? Are you living sustainably? Are you aware of your lifestyle's environmental impact on Beijing? Do you want to make consumption choices that are more socially, environmentally and economically sustainable?
In a city as dynamic as Beijing, there are many innovative ideas and local models that reflects this burgeoning awareness. Join us for a roundtable discussion with Beijing's most interesting sustainable lifestyle practitioners, Nathan Zhang of Brandnü, Simon Kubski of We Impact, Laura Fanelli of The Veggie Table and Jonas Nakonz of X6.均世阁, to learn how our consumption can reflect our values for creative and sustainable living in Beijing.
Nathan Zhang, Founder, Brandnü
Brandnü is an ethical trade network for rural artisans that works in partnership with China’s socially conscious designers and artists to help redesign rural livelihoods by offering support, resources and better access to urban markets. The brandnü project aims to:
- promote and sell ethically-sourced goods from charity projects and social enterprises at its retail store in Beijing;
- provide a platform that unites successful urban creatives with rural artisans to produce more marketable and better quality products;
- pioneer new models for poverty alleviation by facilitating cooperation between China’s rural and urban entrepreneurs; and
- raise public awareness of social innovation; and build bridges between international and Chinese NGOs, social enterprises and organisations.
Simon Kubski, Director, We Impact

Laura Ann Fanelli, Founder, "The Veggie Table" & Green Food Consultant
As founder of The Veggie Table, American chef Laura Fanelli got her start in Hubei Province, learning the nuts and bolts of cooking in China. Laura opened Beijing's first globally-influenced vegan restaurant and is known for sourcing local organic produce. Laura will share with us the challenges and rewards of starting her venture in sustainable food in the heart of Beijing.
Jonas Nakonz, X6.均世阁
Jonas Nakonz studied at the Chinese University of Hong Kong and at ETH Zurich. He worked at organic farms in Switzerland and the Philippines. In Beijing, he worked with Agrachina, the University of Lausanne and Low Carbon City China on Chinese organic food and urban agriculture sectors, with a focus on food embedded energy and emissions. His current projects involve aquaponic gardens in local schools and community spaces and a sustainable food festival, to be realized before the Beijing Design Week with X6 Architecture and Engineering.
