Exhibition – “Drifting” by Jason Kahn

2016/04/10 (Sun) - 2016/04/24 (Sun)

| Free
From April 10 to 24, at Meridian Space, Jason Kahn will present Drifting, a sound / text installation based on the daily sounds of Beijing. On the day of the opening, on April 10th, Jason will discuss the philosophy behind his sonic installations, and share stories of sound discoveries around Beijing.

Each day of March 2016, Kahn will collect new texts written about sounds encountered in his daily travels through Beijing. In addition to these texts Kahn will be collecting sounds, recording on the go. These sounds will be integrated with the numerous texts in the final installation, played through many small speakers installed in the exhibition space. Some of these sounds might parallel the sounds written about in the texts, but many will not.

Drifting is part sound-journal, part investigation into our awareness of the sounds around us and in particular will give residents of Beijing a different perspective on how the sound environments in their city have been perceived from the ears of a visitor, investigating the city each day through a conscious focus on sound.

About Jason Kahn

Jason Kahn is a musician, artist and writer. He was born 1960 in New York and grew up in Los Angeles. He re-located to Europe in 1990 and is currently based in Zürich.

As an electronic musician, vocalist and drummer Kahn collaborates regularly with many musicians, both in improvised settings and in the context of graphical scores which he composes for specific groups.

Kahn has exhibited his installations in museums, galleries, art spaces and public sites internationally. These works focus on the idea of space: the conceptual and physical juncture points, its production and dissolution, and our relation to it as a political, social and environmental medium.
